Wii hacks... Good or bad for the health of your Wii??

So a question i am often asked is whether or not hacking your Wii will "brick" your system. First I'd like to say that this "brick" term is thrown out there a lot and never explained for newbies. Bricking a Wii is when you make a Wii no longer usable, making it as useful as a "brick". Kind of funny huh? So with that out of the way, the answer is yes and no. It used to be very easy to brick your Wii, and I haven't done it, but came quite close a few times last year when I first got the Wii. Now a days all you really need is a 2GB SD card, an external hard drive (at least 200GB) and some patience. Below are some links to sites that I found extremely helpful when you trying to hack the Wii and not 'brick" your system.

Two thing you need to uderstand are the Homebrew channel and WBFS files systems. You don't need a deep understanding, but you should understand what it is. The HomeBrew channel, is a a Wii application that runs off an SD card to allow different applications and games to run off of an CIOS. CIOS is a custom operating system for the Wii to boot off of so that hacked games may be played.

WBFS is the Wii Backup Files system. As it's name implies, it is the file system used to "backup" wii games. This can be used to play games via the USB port in the back of the Wii to play games off an external drive.

I hope this clears some common questions on Wii hacking.
